What is Carrierball?
Carrierball is a proposed professional sport being developed by the National Carrier Ball League (NCBL). It takes a familiar backyard chase — one person has the ball, everyone else wants it — and builds it into a team competition: one rugby-style ball, ten teams, and every second of possession contested.
NCBL is pre-launch. No matches have been played, and the rules are still being developed and tested.
How the proposed format works
- 1
Ten teams, one athlete each
The proposed format has ten teams on the field at once, with exactly one active athlete from each team at a time. Team reserves rotate in.
- 2
Possession is the score
After an athlete gains control of the ball and takes a step, their team earns one point for every completed second of qualifying possession.
- 3
The Core
A small circle at the centre of the field. Reaching it with possession earns a bonus. The bonus value has not been finalised.
- 4
Controlled tackling
Controlled, rugby-style wrap tackling is proposed. When the carrier is legally downed, the scoring timer stops and he must release the ball. Release itself does not score; a new timer starts only after an athlete gains control and takes a step.
- 5
Team standings
Team totals are planned to build toward match results and championship standings across a season.
What is not final yet
Field dimensions, match duration, roster size, the Core bonus value, team identities and final competition rules have not been decided. Before any contact event, competition will require finalised rules, qualified medical and safety oversight, and appropriate coverage.
Who can take part
Athlete interest is open to adults aged 18 and over — from football, rugby, soccer, wrestling, track and other backgrounds. Tryout dates, locations, final eligibility and any athlete compensation have not been announced. Registering interest does not reserve a tryout place or guarantee selection.
